SURAKKHA Project

Background

CRSS & KIA Bangladesh implementing a comprehensive and integrated program in the targeted low lying/swampy (beel) areas so that the communities over there can increase their resilience against the climatic vulnerabilities, come up with some disaster risk reduction activities and undertake resilient livelihood/ income generating activities. CRSS will address both the underlying factors of poverty in targeted areas of 6 Unions under 2 Upazilas of Barisal Districts side by side of their on- going other activities. Many poverty reduction strategies have been considered potential to address the underlying risks and to recognize disaster impacts as a contributing factor to poverty. In this particular program, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), and poverty reduction through undertaking resilient livelihood are strongly integrated. In order to build community resilience, identification and expansion of indigenous coping capacities and strengthening traditional warning systems have been considered as very important strategies and those have been integrated as major thrusts of the project. Poor and marginalized groups (women, children, disabled persons and the hard-core poor) will be specifically targeted with a goal to strengthening their capacity and confidence to access a range of support services with a view to minimizing the all individual, family and community level negative impacts associated with vulnerabilities related to natural disasters and climate change.
